I'm thrilled to share some fascinating stories and insights from my recent conversation with the talented pianist and composer, Jonathan Segal.
Jonathan has had an extensive and diverse creative career as a songwriter, pianist, singer, entertainer, and music educator. It was inspiring to hear about his experiences in the TV industry, where he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy award in the 'Outstanding Original Song' category for his songwriting on TV's 'One Life To Live.' He's also composed many theme songs for network TV shows including 'Mighty Mouse, The New Adventures,' 'Monday Night Football' and 'Another World.' Jonathan's talent and versatility are truly impressive.
He's also worked with legendary performers like Chuck Berry, Dizzy Gillespie, and Ben Vereen. His ability to adapt and play with such a variety of performers is a testament to his skill and adaptability.
When discussing his teaching experience, Jonathan shared his passion for working with students and coaching singers. He's been the middle school chorus director at Trevor Day School, the music specialist at Solomon Schechter School of Manhattan and PS6, and music director at Crane Lake Camp and for the Summer Stock musical theater camp at the JCC in Manhattan. He teaches piano privately and coaches singers. His commitment to music education and coaching singers is truly inspiring.
Jonathan also shared his experiences in the theater industry, including his work on Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. It was fascinating to hear about his work as a musical director for Off-Broadway's "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah," and even more impressive to hear that he wrote the Off-Off-Broadway musical "Potholes On Parade" with Stan Sinberg.
